About

PSA Peugeot Citroën, officially known as PSA Group, was a French multinational automotive manufacturing corporation formed in 1976 through the merger of Peugeot and Citroën. The company was created when Peugeot S.A. acquired a controlling 89.95% stake in the bankrupt Citroën company, establishing PSA as the world's second-largest car manufacturer in Europe. Headquartered in Rueil-Malmaison, France, PSA Group evolved from its automotive roots dating back to 1885 when the first Peugeot automobile was designed and 1914 when André Citroën established his company. Throughout its existence, PSA Group was known for innovative automotive technologies and design, particularly in compact and mid-size vehicles. The company underwent significant expansion in 2017 when it acquired the German Opel and British Vauxhall brands from General Motors for approximately $2 billion, strengthening its European market position. PSA Group operated manufacturing facilities across Europe, South America, and Asia, producing vehicles under the Peugeot, Citroën, DS Automobiles, Opel, and Vauxhall brands. The company was consistently ranked among Europe's largest automakers, with annual production exceeding 3 million vehicles at its peak. In December 2019, PSA Group agreed to merge with Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to create the world's fourth-largest automaker with projected annual cost savings of €3.7 billion. The merger was completed on January 16, 2021, forming Stellantis N.V., named from the Latin verb 'stello' meaning 'to brighten with stars.' This historic merger brought together 136 years of Peugeot heritage and 107 years of Citroën innovation under the broader Stellantis umbrella, which now operates 14 automotive brands globally and ranks as the world's fifth-largest automaker by sales volume.
