About
Mannesmann AG was a major German industrial conglomerate headquartered in Düsseldorf that evolved from a pioneering steel tube manufacturer into one of Europe's most diversified corporations before its historic acquisition by Vodafone in 2000. Founded in 1890 as Deutsch-Österreichische Mannesmannröhren-Werke AG, the company originated from the revolutionary seamless steel pipe manufacturing process invented by brothers Reinhard and Max Mannesmann in 1886, which earned them the world's first patent for seamless steel tube production. Renamed Mannesmann AG in 1955, the company transformed from its traditional steel roots into a globally diversified industrial powerhouse with operations spanning four major sectors: Engineering (35% of revenue), Automotive (29%), Telecommunications (24%), and Tubes (12%). With over 130,860 employees worldwide and annual revenues of €23.27 billion by 1999, Mannesmann had become Germany's largest industrial conglomerate. The company's engineering and automotive divisions included world-renowned subsidiaries such as Rexroth (hydraulics and automation), Demag (cranes and material handling), VDO (automotive electronics), Fichtel & Sachs (automotive components), and Krauss-Maffei (machinery), many of which achieved global market leadership positions. Mannesmann's strategic entry into telecommunications in 1990, following German market liberalization, proved transformational when it established D2 Mannesmann, Germany's first private cellular network operator competing directly with Deutsche Telekom. This telecommunications success, generating €9.067 billion in revenue by 1999, positioned Mannesmann as a European leader among private telecommunications providers with integrated services spanning mobile networks, fixed-line telephony, internet, and e-commerce across Germany, Italy, the UK, and Austria. The company's acquisition of Orange from Hutchison Whampoa for $33 billion in 1999 triggered Vodafone's hostile takeover bid, culminating in the largest merger in corporate history valued at $190 billion in February 2000, fundamentally reshaping both European telecommunications and corporate governance practices while marking the end of the Mannesmann brand in most sectors.
