Hospital Universitario La Paz (HULP) stands as one of Spain's premier healthcare institutions and the largest teaching hospital in Madrid. Established in 1961 and officially opened in July 1964, it was the country's first modern hospital center. Located in northern Madrid, this comprehensive medical complex serves as a reference hospital for an area with 750,000 inhabitants while providing specialized care to patients from across Spain and internationally. The hospital complex comprises 17 buildings organized into four major facilities: General Hospital, Maternal Hospital, Children's Hospital, and Traumatology and Rehabilitation Hospital, with approximately 1,300 beds and 45 operating theaters. With 7,000 qualified employees, the hospital handles around 50,000 annual admissions, treats over 200,000 emergency patients, and serves more than 1.3 million outpatients yearly. The Children's Hospital serves as a national reference center for 25 pathologies, while the institution's transplant program, established in 1984, represents a milestone in Spanish medicine. In 2009, the Hospital La Paz Institute for Health Research (IdiPAZ) was established as a joint venture with the Autonomous University of Madrid, creating a multidisciplinary biomedical research platform with 53 research groups. Accredited by the Instituto de Salud Carlos III since 2010, IdiPAZ has become a reference in national and international translational biomedical research. The hospital was recognized as the best-valued public hospital in Spain in 2018, leading in seventeen clinical services according to recent rankings.
