About

Karstadt Warenhaus GmbH was a historic German department store chain founded in 1881 by Rudolf Karstadt in Wismar as a small textile shop, evolving to become one of Germany's most iconic retail institutions. Over the following decades, Karstadt expanded aggressively across Germany, diversifying its product range and establishing itself as a leading department store chain with headquarters in Essen since 1969. The company faced significant financial challenges beginning in 2004, leading to its first insolvency in June 2009 when parent company Arcandor filed for bankruptcy. Following court-ordered protective measures, Karstadt was sold to investor Nicolas Berggruen in June 2010, who successfully restructured the company. In 2014, Austrian investor René Benko's Signa Holding acquired Karstadt and pursued a strategic merger with rival department store chain Galeria Kaufhof. This merger was completed in March 2019, creating Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof GmbH, the second-largest department store group in Europe with 92 locations and over 18,000 employees. However, the merged entity has struggled with repeated financial crises, filing for insolvency protection three times between 2020 and 2024. The first insolvency in April 2020 occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic, resulting in approximately 40 store closures and 4,000 job cuts despite receiving €680 million in state aid. A second insolvency followed in October 2022 due to rising energy costs, inflation, and weak consumer spending. The third and most recent insolvency filing occurred in January 2024, highlighting ongoing challenges in adapting to the changing retail landscape and evolving consumer preferences. In April 2024, NRDC Equity Partners and BB Kapital SA successfully acquired Galeria Karstadt Kaufhof GmbH through an insolvency plan, representing the latest chapter in the troubled retailer's efforts to achieve financial stability and modernize its operations for the digital age.
